The public is invited to attend the Community Open House taking place this weekend Friday to Sunday.

The event will feature light refreshments and craft demonstrations from some of the center’s juried artisans: Judy Ligon, polymer clay, Friday, 10 a.m. to noon 1 to 3 p.m. and Denton Middleton, woodcarving, 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The gallery will be open on 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The official state Artisans Center is a nonprofit, visual arts organization representing Virginia crafts through exhibition, education and retail opportunities. The center’s programs are made possible in part by support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The exhibit will feature hats, scarves, jewelry, candles, wood furniture, ceramics, baskets and stained glass.

Among the local artists in the exhibit are candlemaker Charles Deaton and Karen Shapcott, a fiber artist specializing in needlefelting.

Shapcott’s work entails taking natural wool and then, using special needles, drawing the fibers together. Shapcott’s fiber sculptures will be featured in the exhibit.
