Srinagar, Jan 28: Continuing with its programme of refurbishing the outlets of the Handicrafts Corporation, minister of state for corporations and chairman Handicrafts (S&E) Corporation Abdul Rashid Dar Monday inaugurated a renovated retail outlet of the Kashmir Government Arts Emporium at Lal Chowk here.
The swanky showroom, which is fully air-conditioned and computerized, is the first of its kind the corporation has set up in the Valley.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister who was flanked by the Managing Director of the Corporation Abdul Majid Khanday, said the outlet would showcase the Kashmiri handicrafts including shawls, carpets, woodcarving, paper machie, namdas, copperware and chainstitch products, etc.
“The corporation is working hard for promoting the traditional Kashmiri Handicraft in Kashmir and elsewhere,†Dar said adding that the corporation was doing a good job by giving a new look to its outlets in and outside the state.
With the outlet falling in the city center, the corporation expects the showroom would contribute substantially to the sales and the revenue of the corporation.
“We hope the outlet here will attract more customers,†General Manager Handicraft Corporation Fayaz Ahmad told Greater Kashmir, adding that corporation’s outlet in Jammu would be renovated on the similar lines this year.
The corporation had last year renovated its showroom in Chandigarh following which its sales jumped considerably. “The annual sales that used to be around rupees thirty lakhs after the renovation reached to whopping rupees seventy lakhs,†he said.
“As part of our renovation drive, we would also be upgrading our facilities by renovating our outlets in New Delhi and Kolkata,†Ahmad said.
He said the renovation of outlets was helping the sales to grow. “Our annual revenue generation increased by thirty percent as compared to the last year with the sales increasing by Rs 50 lakhs. The corporation had been setting a revenue target instead of a sales target, which proved more fruitful for the corporation,†he added.
