VSO, the international development charity, is calling on textile and fashion design professionals to consider how their skills could help some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities fight poverty.
The charity, which has seen an increase in demand for volunteers with a professional background in textile and fashion design, currently has openings for volunteers in
Africa and Asia.
Gemma Hoskins, marketing advisor at VSO said: “VSO is normally associated with education and healthcare professionals.
“While these volunteers are an intrinsic part of our work we have seen a growth in areas not traditionally linked to VSO, such as textile and fashion design.
“The handicraft and textile industries are major sources of employment in both Africa and Asia. VSO is working with local organisations and co-operatives to make sure they’re a part of this, helping them to produce goods that can generate an income.
“Textile and fashion professionals could be using their skills to ensure that the products being produced are marketable and of quality, that colleagues have access to training on the latest techniques or that young people wishing to learn a skill have the best level of education.
“With both long and short term placements available textile and fashion design professionals have the skills to play a big part in helping disadvantaged communities generate much needed income and give young people the opportunity to learn a life-long trade.”
Ideally VSO is looking for textile and fashion design professionals with degree or relevant qualification and at least 3 years practical experience. Some knowledge of training or working with young people would also be desirable.
