eBay launches online site in Vietnamese

Online auction giant eBay has made public a promotional site in the Vietnamese language at eBay.vn, hoping to benefit from Vietnam’s economic and trade potential, the company said Thursday.
A high Internet using rate, stable and fast economic growth and the communist nation’s membership of the World Trade Organisation were considered momentums for eBay to launch the site, said Sam McDonagh, Director for eBay Southeast Asia, in a statement.
“We believe the Vietnamese people and companies will recognize the tremendous potential eBay offers as the leading global online marketplace and we expect our user base here to continue to grow,” he said.
eBay said its first user registered in Vietnam in 1998. Some of the top categories traded by Vietnamese sellers on eBay include collectibles, cameras and accessories as well as handicraft products.
As 17 percent of the 84 million population access online information, the Internet has become very popular in communist Vietnam, an emerging economy in South East Asia with a growth rate of nearly 8.2 percent last year.
