Handicraft expo begins
THALASSERY: An exhibition of Gujarat handicrafts and handlooms of the Gujarat Emporium, sponsored by the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts under the Ministry of Textiles of the Union Government, began at the Sarada Krishna Iyer auditorium here.
According to K Arunachalam, manager of the Gujarat Emporium, the exhibition-cum-sale showcases handicrafts and handprinted items from Gujarat such as colourful dresses, gift items, leather bags, purses, puppets made of wood and valuable jewelleries
Dress materials and bedsheets from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh are also available at the exhibition.
Specialised items including Chanapatna toys, pooja items, wooden needles and Lucknow sarees are also available.
The exhibition promotes participation of national award winners with their own products at low rates. Government rebates at the rate of 20 percent on handlooms and 10 percent on handicraft items are available during the exhibition period, said Arunachalam. The exhibition will come to a close on April 15.
