The government should give special emphasis on expansion of the country’s potential handicraft sector. As our handicraft sector has a good demand in the world market, it is needed to be developed creatively to feed the global market. And for this, there is no alternative to setting up an active design centre.
Besides, there must be a qualitative expansion of handicraft industries at home. This is necessary for strengthening their endeavours to attain further advancement.
Oddly, it is learnt that the design centre of Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation has not been funded to carry on research on design. But this design centre once was active and met the thirst for improvement of the weavers
At the present moment, without expanding its diversity of work, the standard of the handicraft sector cannot be upgraded up to the international standard.
There is obviously the need to look into this promising sector by all concerned. They must prepare themselves on which areas they should focus with due importance to promote the country’s interest. As expansion as well as development of small and cottage industries throughout the country will help cut poverty to the greater benefit of the downtrodden, the handicraft industries should not be ignored. In an over-populated country like Bangladesh, its expansion is a must to enhance the standard of life and living of the poor.
