Handicrafts Exhibition “Visithru” of 14 professional handicraft artistes organized by the National Crafts Council will be held at Lionel Wendt Gallery commencing March 12 to 15. Some rare creations of hereditary handicraft artistes will be on display and these artistes representing different provinces will showcase different handcrafts inherent to each province, the National Crafts Council said.
NCC Development Assistant Ms. Geethani Weeratunge told The Island Financial Review that handicrafts made from cane, reed and rush, brass, lace work, silver, wood carvings, eco-friendly handmade paper, lacqurware, pottery ceramic – terra cotta and Bumbara weaving.
She said that unlike other handicrafts exhibitions, this exhibition’s salient feature would be the handicrafts artistes would showcase their exhibits reflecting the present-day requirements of visitors and buyers. They would slightly deviate from the traditional handicrafts creations and would be highly competitive.
NCC Chairman Buddhi Keerthisena said that the principal aim of this exhibition would be to raise the standard of living of the handicraft artistes and encourage them to create new handicraft items.
