Around 50% of raw materials used in Vietnam’s traditional arts and crafts production are currently imported from foreign markets according to the Vietnam Trade Village Association.
This situation is due to the exhaustion of local raw material sources, which resulted from both the lack of material investment in those sources, and also from over exploitation.
Currently, Vietnam has to purchase bamboo, rattan and sedge from Laos, Indonesia and Cambodia, while other kinds of raw materials such as silk and cotton are imported from India and Bangladesh at high prices.
