KUALA LUMPUR: There are fewer than 10 Malaysian handicraft items showcased at the handicraft gallery at the United Nations head office and all are outdated, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi lamented.

“It’s humiliating. Tourists go to the handicraft gallery at the UN head office to buy handicraft but what they are offered from Malaysia is pathetic,” he said when launching National Handicraft Day at the Handicraft Complex here yesterday. (more…)

With its expertise and entrepreneurship, India can help Ethiopia develop its bamboo industry, an Ethiopian official visiting India said on Sunday.

Currently, bamboo plantations cover about one million hectares in Ethiopia.

The Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka [ICTA] in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Handicrafts Board, started the Laksala Automation Project to provide an ICT solution to the Laksala Head Office as well as to computerize three of their retail outlets; York Street, Thummulla and Kandy.

iOM Lanka (Pvt) Ltd used their Retailigence software solution to enable Laksala’s supplier management, inventory control, distribution management, sales automation, statistical and trend analysis and provide management information reports, all via ICT. (more…)

Asmindo oprimistic 2008 furniture, handicraft exports to reach US$3 bln

Shenzhen (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Funiture and Handicraft Industries Association (Asmindo) is optimistic Indonesia will achieve its target of earning three billion US dollars from furniture and handicraft product exports in 2008 despite strong competition from other countries.

“We are optimistic the target of three billlion US dollars for 2008 will be reached with the support of all relevant parties in the government and business community,” Asmindo Chairman Ambar Tjahyono said here on Saturday. (more…)

NEW DELHI: The appreciation of the rupee has resulted in a decline in exports of a number of products including readymade garments, primary & semi-finished iron & steel, plastic & linoleum, non-ferrous metals, marine products, sports goods, handicrafts and carpets. Hundreds of people are visiting the ongoing month-long handicraft fair at Jatisangha Shishu Park in Khulna city everyday to buy handicraft items of their choice.

The fair, organised by the National Association of Small Industries and Handicraft of Bangladesh, began on March 6 to promote handicraft goods and products of small industries. (more…)
