On February 14, at the general meeting of the Curry Anadromous Fishermen at the Indian Creek Hatchery there was a special guest speaker. His name is Paul DeAngelo of Fish Art, Aquatic Artistry Originals. Paul’s speciality is skin mounts of salmon and steelhead exclusively. Paul is relocating here in Gold Beach from Connecticut. His former fishery was in upstate New York in the Lake Ontario region. (more…)

As Grand Bahamians continue to rediscover the great interest that still exists in the nation’s straw craft industry, handicraft professionals on Long Island never forgot and have honed their craft, finding inventive ways to display their talents.

Through the overwhelming demand from local straw manufacturers to ensure that an adequate supply of plaits are available the Bahamas Agricultural and Industrial Corporation (BAIC) decided to assist by hosting a Straw Handicraft Training Progra-mme. (more…)

MANGALORE Feb 25: In its continued efforts to introduce more need-based courses, the Mysore-based Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) will introduce seven certificate courses related to handicrafts. It will offer a degree course in special education to produce resource persons to teach children having physical and neurological disorders. The KSOU is also planning to offer a course to farmers, in association with the University of Agriculture Sciences (UAS), Bangalore, according to B.A. Vivek Rai, Vice-Chancellor, KSOU.

Govt OKs $125 mln interest subsidy for exporters

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - The Indian cabinet on Thursday approved an extra spending of 5 billion rupees ($125 million) to subsidise interest rates on loans for exporters, a government spokeswoman said, to help soften the blow from a firmer rupee.

“The measure will ensure mitigation of the effect of rupee appreciation across the export sectors and will … enable them to achieve export targets,” she said. (more…)

Viet Nam pours 600 million USD into projects in Laos

Viet Nam has invested about 600 million USD in economic-development projects in Laos since 1989, the Lao Planning and Investment Ministry said in a recent report.

These projects focus mainly on the fields of agriculture, industry and handicraft, garment, trade, banking, hotel-restaurant business, energy and mining.

The agro-forestry sector has attracted 25 projects worth 117 million USD, while the mining sector drawn 15 projects worth 33 million USD.

With two hydropower plant projects, the energy sector has attracted much more money, about 270 million USD.

WATCHING Bahraini basket weaver Salah Al Madan at work is like watching a magician pull a rabbit from a hat.

It’s hard to figure out how he does it but within minutes he can turn a piece of lifeless palm stalk into a work of art.

Fijian Craft and Tourist Guide Association president Apakuki Tabuakoro said the sellers had experienced a decrease in sales since the coup.

Lucknow, February 14 The Hindi heartland is looking to China for technology. Hand tools like drills and high-tech, cost-effective textile machines will come in exchange of PVC dishes for microwave ovens, potato chips and catalogue printing.
That is what a 50-strong business delegation to join the bi-annual industrial fair in China aims to accomplish.

The team, led by Indian Industries Association (IIA) is leaving for China’s Guangzhou to attend the 103rd Canton Fair — scheduled to start from April 15. (more…)
