Johor Buzz: Handicraft heaven
New Straits Times, Malaysia

THERE’S money to be made in the handicraft business. This has been proven by a traditional handicraft and souvenir shop set up three years ago at the Festive Street Mall, Johor Baru, which has been enjoying brisk sales.

U-Craft is an ideal place for those looking for unusual items to decorate their home or handmade gifts.

It stocks a variety of handcrafted items sourced locally and from other Asian countries.

Outlet supervisor Siti Nurshahara Nanihar said the shop had more than 2,000 items, mostly imported from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, China, India and the Philippines.

“We have a huge collection of decorative items, wood puzzles, mats, hantaran baskets, traditional games, laundry baskets, tissue boxes and walking sticks. Most are made of either bamboo, rattan, teakwood, shell or leaves,” she said.
She said one of the most popular items was bags, with the outlet having a large stock in different sizes and for all ages.

Traditional musical instruments such as kompang, rebana, angklung and gong are also available at the outlet.

U-craft is open from 11am to 10.30pm on weekdays and until 11.30pm on weekends.
