Interim Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Housing Adi Laufitu Malani made the comment while opening the World Tourism Week in Suva on Tuesday.

You’ll be especially proud when your diamond-shaped creation takes to the sky.

1- Cut two lengths of doweling rod, one 16 inches long and another 24 inches long.

2- Measure each cut piece with a ruler. Mark the shorter, 16-inch piece at half its length and mark the longer, 24-inch piece at a third of its length.

3- Position the two rods at right angles, one on top of the other so that the marks touch. The two rods should form a cross shape. (more…)

The charity, which has seen an increase in demand for volunteers with a professional background in textile and fashion design, currently has openings for volunteers in
Africa and Asia.

Fabric made artistically, Khyiam is used to decorate tents in the evenings of Ramadan in Egypt. This millenary practice is the main business of several families in Cairo. However, fabric made in large scale by factories, much cheaper than the traditional product, may end this ancient technique.

Cairo – Al Khyamiya is a famous commercial centre in the centre of Islamic Cairo. There are made colourful tents with which the streets and temples are decorated in Egypt. The souk (bazaar) which has been in operation since the 17th century is, in reality, a long narrow street covered by a stone roof. There are many small shops in which many men, each sitting in front of his sewing machine, work on their millenary and artistic practice. Visiting the small street does not take much more than ten minutes on foot. (more…)

Handicraft and Design Exhibition Opens

The exhibition “Handicraft through Design,” in relation to next week’s convention “Nordic Craft and Tradition,” opens today at Gerduberg Culture Center in Reykjavík, and features the work of 34 designers, artists and handcrafters.

The exhibition is held in cooperation with the Icelandic Handcrafts Society and its goal is to encourage artists to find inspiration in traditional craft while creating new art work. (more…)

Buenos Aires (VNA) – A gathering to introduce culinary art of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has taken place in Venezuela as part of activities to mark the 40 th founding anniversary of the grouping.

A father and son team from southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality has succeeded in making what one expert has said are the first-ever books made from bamboo pulp.

Tang Hongchou, 54, and his 25-year-old son Tang Haoyu have created a collection of six books, three of which feature traditional stories and the remainder classic works.

While people in ancient times did write on large blocks of bamboo, these are the first actual books that use paper made from bamboo, Liu Yu, the curator of the Dalian Bamboo Culture Museum in Guangning County of northeast China’s Liaoning Province, said. (more…)

Bogor, W Java (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian Ecolabeling Agency (LEI) has set up cooperation with several other institutions to provide the furniture market with products and handicrafts made from wood taken from ecolabeled forests, a spokesman said.

Therefore, LEI as well as people`s forest management groups in Wonogiri district in Central Java and Gunungkidul district in Yogyakarta which already have ecolabel certificates along with the Indonesian Furniture and Handicraft Industry Association (Asmindo) had agreed to provide the furniture market with ecolabeled furniture and handicraft products, LEI`s communication manager Indra Setiawan said here Tuesday. Luu Duy Dan, vice president of the craft village association, spoke to Thoi bao Kinh te Viet Nam (Vietnam Economic Times) about the association and about how to develop Viet Nam’s handicraft villages.

There are more than 2,000 craft villages nation-wide, creating 13 million jobs and reaching an annual export turnover of US$600 million. Viet Nam’s traditional handicrafts production is still proportionately small scale. Why do you think that is? (more…)
