Sri Lanka:Presidential awards for handicraft and small-medium industries

The winners of the Shilpa-2006 handicraft, small and medium scale industry national exhibition held in November 2006 will be awarded with presidential awards on the 30th of this month. The recipients will also be awarded with cash prizes from Rs.5000/= upward to 50,000/=.

Announcing this at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today, Minister of Minister of Rural Industries & Self-Employment Promotion S.B. Navinna said that the objective of this awarding is to appreciate and encourage the personals and communities engaged in local industries.

Minister also stressed that holding these exhibitions annually has greatly contributed to the local manufactures to expose their products both in local and international market.

He said that his Ministry had initiated these type of exhibitions since 2004 and it has served in large capacity to the local manufactures who are specially engaged in handicraft sector and small-medium scale industries locally.

The Ministry of Rural Industries & Self-Employment Promotion has implemented several programmes to introduce emerging technology to the industry.

Further explaining the steps taken by his Ministry to enhance the market for the rural industrial products, Minister Navinna said that plans have already been sketched to expand the market for products manufactured locally. As a result the rural manufactures are given an opportunity to directly access the buyers and receiving orders at every rural industrial village, a concept inaugurated by the Ministry.
