Tainted official’s property sealed

Kanpur, July 31: Kanpur Police today sealed the property of former director of All India Handicraft Board, Brijendra Sonkar, and notorious criminals Mehtab Lula and Mohan Acharya, who were booked under Gangster Act.

On Tuesday, Superintendent of Police (East) Atul Saxena along with a huge contingent of police sealed the property worth lakhs.

Saxena told Newsline that Sonkar’s property worth Rs 50 lakh was sealed in Khatikana, Anwarganj and Narayan purwa locality.

“Nobody was present at Sonkar’s house and the property has been booked under Gangster Act is sealed in favour of state government,” Saxena added.

Property of notorious criminal Mehtab Lula worth Rs 16 lakhs including immovable property worth Rs 12 lakhs was sealed in the Babupurwa area.

At least 20 cases, of which seven were murder cases, were registered against him. Police also sealed the property and bank accounts of Mohan Acharya who was held at Swaroop Nagar.

At least 34 cases of murder, attempt to murder, drug peddling and offences were registered against Sonkar under various sections of NDPS Act, National Security Act and Gangster Act.

But when the police tried tightening their noose around Sonkar, he took help from Congress party and was appointed as the director of All India Handicraft Board.

Sonkar also came into bad books, when his supporters organised a grand and lavish welcome after appointment and arrived to city in an official car with a red beacon.

The party had to face a lot of criticism after the controversial appointment.

Local Congress leaders met Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Prakash Jaiswal and demanded his removal.
