MIRI – Janji Malaysia Art, an initiative supported by integrated forest resource and wood products company Samling Global, recently held a two-day Handicraft Demonstration and Promotion here to support sustainable living for the indigenous people of Sarawak.
It is an initiative empowering local communities to develop self-reliant, environmentally-balanced living by harnessing their creativity, while preserving their cultures and beliefs. The event carried the theme “Janji: Our Promise for Tomorrow” and was aimed at guiding the local communities towards enhancing the quality of their products.
“This will lead to better acceptance by a wider market and open up opportunities for improved income and standard of living for them,” said Kartini Illias, the organiser and coordinator of Janji.
It was also aimed at paying tribute to the local communities by preserving their culture and handicraft skills and creativity since the days of their forefathers.
