Kohima/ Imphal/ Gangtok, May 21: The 22nd General Conference of the Angami students union concluded in Nagaland recently.
Hundreds of students, including unit presidents and general secretaries participated in the conference. The annual function aims at promoting and preserving the culture and tradition of the Angami tribe. Among the sixteen tribes recognised in Nagaland, Angamis are one of the biggest tribes and forms a large chunk of the population.
Polo tournament in Manipur
Not many know that polo originated in Manipur and was called Sagol Khaengjei. Today, it is one of the most popular games of the region and is played throughout the State with great enthusiasm. Recently, the 17th Governor’s Cup Invitation Polo Tournament was held in Imphal, which saw the participation of clubs from across the State. The Thangmeiband Polo Club won the tournament.
An annually event, the tournament provides a platform for young talent of the region. There are 35 polo clubs in Manipur.
ikkim’s handloom industry
The handloom and handicraft industry of Sikkim has grown by leaps and bounds. Today, it has created a niche for itself in the domestic market. The Directorate of Handloom and Handicraft Industry of Sikkim is working towards this cause.
The handicraft industry is training unemployed youths to create a strong pool of talent with a special focus on women of the region. Angoora weaving, which is a very famous form of art in the State, is also being revived on a massive scale.
SF and BDR meeting
A three-day round of talks between the India- Bangladesh border guards concluded in Chittagong recently. Aimed at bringing better co-operation and border management, various issues regarding infiltration, arms and drugs smuggling and transborder crime were discussed at length.
