Saras Mahotsav, a treat for handloom, handicraft lovers

Lucknow, February 19: Lovers of handloom and handicrafts have yet another chance to decorate their homes with the best from all over the country, at prices that promise not to burn a hole in your pocket. Saras Mahotsav, an annual affair of the department of Rural Development to promote rural entrepreneurship, opened up at the Ambedkar Rally Maidan on Sunday.

The main idea of the mela is to promote the brand name ‘Saras’, which is a label given to all products manufactured under the rural entrepreneurship development project of the department. The scheme is mainly run by the Government of India through state departments.

So it’s not only the craftsmen of UP, but also those from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Orissa and Himachal Pradesh, who are participating in the fair, which concludes on February 23.

Here is a list of things from which visitors can take their pick from: furniture from Saharanpur, brass ware from Moradabad, bed sheets and curtains from Panipat, applique work and batik bed sheets and kurtas from West Bengal, suits from Haryana and Punjab and applique purses and lamp shades from Orissa. With price tags starting from Rs 5 onwards, the Saras Mela is certainly a place to be.
