PUDUCHERRY: The government is planning to set up an Apex Handicraft Federation to promote handicraft sector as a major engine of growth for addressing the problems of unemployment particularly in rural areas. Primary Cooperative societies would be set in rural areas focussing on the handicraft sector, A Anbarasu, Secretary Cooperation told this website’s newspaper.
Out of the 21 types of handicraft manufactured from Puducherry, the government would be selecting five to six items based on the number of persons associated with the craft for wider intervention.
The federation would have members from Primary Cooperative Societies, which would draw the plans. The Department of Cooperation had already taken the initiative and appointed the deputy registrar of cooperatives as the nodal officer to work out the modalities, said Anbarasu. The government had also applied to the Handicrafts Development Corporation of India for affiliation, he said.
