The quake struck the Central Java city of Yogyakarta, a major tourist destination in the area, and reportedly flattened the town of Bantul, known for its pottery, furniture and handicraft exports.

Bisnis said the government has allocated more than 1 trln rupiah to reconstruct the region. The death toll from the 6.3-magnitude quake has risen to 4,983 people as of this morning, Agence France-Presse reported. It was the biggest natural disaster since December 2004 when some 131,000 Acehnese died in a quake-triggered tsunami. The economic fallout from the Aceh disaster had been minimal, as its gas production facilities were largely unaffected and due to the province”s small account of the national gross domestic product.
