ADB remains committed to helping Aceh economy

Banda Aceh (ANTARA News) - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it will stick to its commitment to revive and develop the economy of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) in the wake of the tsunami which devastated large parts of the province in December 2004.

“The ADB has provided at least US$340 million for post-tsunami rehabilitation and reconstruction of Aceh, including the revival and improvement of the people`s economy,” ADB Vice President, Lawrence Greenwood, said here after visiting an ADB-funded agricultural project in Mireuk Lamreudop Village, Baitussalam subdisrict, Wednesday. Vietnamese businesses join handicraft exhibition in Algeria

Algiers (VNA) - Eleven Vietnamese businesses have joined 304 Algerian enterprises and 83 others from Africa, Asia and the Middle East in the 13th International Fine Arts and Handicrafts Exhibition, which opened in Algiers, Algeria, on Mar. 28.
Viet Nam’s traditional handicrafts, including lacquer works, products made of rattan-bamboo-wood, porcelains, ceramics and silks have attracted much attention from foreign visitors.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mustapha Benbada, Algerian Minister of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Chairman of the Algeria-Viet Nam Joint Committee, highlighted the importance placed by the Algerian Government on the local handicrafts industry.

The Algerian Government has allocated 5 billion Dinars to develop the handicrafts industry, he said.-Enditem

SANTIAGO, Chile Relatives of 12 American tourists killed when a bus carrying them on an excursion in northern Chile tumbled down a mountainside flew to the country Thursday, while officials said the victims were members of a Jewish group on vacation.

Two Americans survived the crash but suffered broken bones and were moved to an intensive care unit at a local hospital as a precaution, according to Celebrity Cruises President Dan Hanrahan and a doctor in Miami.

The Chilean driver and tour guide also were hospitalized, said Juan Carlos Poli, a city hall spokesman in the Pacific port city of Arica. (more…)

The Dukhan Women’s Association (DWA) has held its fourth annual cultural and handicraft exhibition at the Dukhan Recreation Centre.
The two-day exhibition, organsied under the auspices of Ahmed Saif al-Sulaiti, the operations manager of Qatar Petroleum for Dukhan, was opened by Saeed Mohannadi, Qatar Petroleum’s director of operations, and DWA president Margaret al-Kuwari.

The highlights of the exhibition, held on March 23 and 24, were a cultural village, cultural performances of all participating countries by the children of Dukhan and homemade food stalls set up by the women of DWA. The proceeds of the exhibition will go to charity and be handed over to Sheikha Hissa bint Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani, the UN special rapporteur on disability.

Jayapura (ANTARA News) - Amerika Serikat (AS) berminat membeli tikar Indonesia yang dibuat penduduk asli Pulau Yapen, Kabupayen Yapen Waropen, Papua, karena tikar tersebut sangat sejuk ketika dipakai untuk berbaring atau perhiasan rumah.

Bupati Yapen Waropen, Ir. Soleman Daud Betawi, di Jayapura, mengakui masyarakat negara “Paman Sam” itu sangat berminat membeli tikar asal Pulau Yapen.

Peluang ini akan dimanfaatkan untuk mendorong masyarakat agar lebih giat lagi menganyam tikar karena menarik wisatawan AS maupun Eropa. (more…)

This is also part of the Kingdom “Vision 2010” tourism policy that seeks particularly the development of a diversified hotel offer of high quality, the rehabilitation of the cultural soul of Casablanca, the setting up of infrastructures and equipment of congresses and exhibitions, and the improvement of the urban quality of the city. A six-day independence and spring fair of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) began at the BSCIC Bhaban at Motijheel in the capital on Sunday, reports BSS.

A total of 64 stalls have been set up to display their handicraft products, a press release said.

The products are honey, various kinds of pickle, jam-jelly, cakes, wooden products, various varieties of cane and bamboo handicrafts, Nakshi Kathas, embroidery products, attractive dresses of children, Jamdani sharees and dolls. (more…)

Rajasthan’s handicraft products were being sought by foreign tourists but nowadays, this trend is changing.

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Kementerian Koperasi dan UKM memfasilitasi 200 pelaku Usaha Kecil dan Menengah (UKM) yang lolos seleksi untuk mengikuti 14 pameran dagang di luar negeri selama tahun 2006 dengan alokasi anggaran Rp6,47 miliar.

Menurut Deputi Bidang Pemasaran dan Jaringan Usaha (Deputi IV) Menneg Koperasi dan UKM Hasan Jauhari di Jakarta, Senin, negara tujuan pameran tersebut di antaranya Uni Emirat Arab (Dubai), Jerman (Frankurt), Italia (Milan) dan Singapura.

Ia menambahkan, dana tersebut digunakan untuk membiayai pelaku UKM membuka booth dan separuh biaya akomodasi sedangkan sisanya ditanggung sendiri. (more…)

EXPORTERS from the Davao Region asked the government to come up with measures to help them cope with the effects of the appreciation of the peso to agriculture and handicraft exports products that are predominant in the region.

In a position paper, the PhilExport-Southern Mindanao board of trustees stated that with the high cost of inputs, the exporters in the region are beginning to be at the losing edge in terms of price competitiveness as against their counterparts whose production inputs are comparatively cheaper.
