Representatives from 12 provinces and cities on the central coast – from Quang Tri to Khanh Hoa – and in the Central Highlands met in Buon Ma Thuot, the capital of Dak Lak province, to review their cooperation in 2005 and discuss goals for this year.
They agreed to launch a website to provide information about the central region and join hands to operate tours to tourist attractions in the region.
The highlights will include the Central Heritage Road tour which takes in the UNESCO-listed World Heritage Sites in central Vietnam – the former feudal capital of Hue in Thua Thien-Hue; the ancient town of Hoi An; the Cham ruins at My Son in Quang Nam; and Phong Nha-Ke Bang cave in Quang Binh.
They will also jointly promote a tour to the Central Highlands, which comprises Dak Lak, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Nong, and Lam Dong provinces, and a trans-Asia tour to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand.
The provinces also pledged to jointly organize fairs and exhibitions of Vietnamese products and handicrafts.
The region welcomed more than 22 million tourists last year while income from tourism was VND2.2 trillion (US$138.3 million).
